With Felix by her side helping her move, Felicity is in Halifax starting medical school. Things are not going well as she is the only female in the class, with her professors trying to dissuade her from continuing. Off in the distance, Felicity and Felix spot Gus Pike. Ever since Gus left Avonlea to return to being a sailor, Felicity and Gus have not seen each other, nor have they made a recent commitment to each other about a future between the two. Although Felicity still has feelings for Gus, she is reluctant to speak to him as it appears that he is courting another woman. Meanwhile, a seemingly delusional beggar flower woman on the street named Eliza recognizes an artifact on Gus' possession that she sees as belonging to Ezekiel Crane. Gus suspects that she has a connection to his past, perhaps she even being his mother, despite Gus being told that his mother, also named Eliza, is buried at a grave-site in Avonlea.

Felicity feels like she's in limbo. In all likelihood, Gus is dead, but she is clinging to that faint hope that he is still alive. As such, she's placed her life on hold. Although Felicity feels it is too soon and is a slight to Colleen Pritchard's memory, Seth Pritchard got remarried - in part, doing so to provide a mother for his baby - which places into others' minds, which they try to convince her of, that she too should move on without Gus. Meanwhile, the town has been deeded the old Lloyd mansion. When a bunch of orphaned sibling runaways are found squatting in the run down and otherwise unoccupied mansion, Felicity has the idea of turning the mansion into a foundling home. Although the motion does have some objection, the town does decide to move forward with Felicity's idea. This project provides a new focus in Felicity's life. Stuart McRae, the new bank manager who only recently arrived in Avonlea, is another distraction for her as a potential suitor.

It's one week until Olivia and Jasper's wedding, the ceremony and reception to be held on Jasper's farm. Olivia wants a simple and casual affair, while Jasper wants to do whatever pleases Olivia. The one thing that Jasper does want is to make a toast to his new wife, but is afraid his constant stutter will mar what he wants to say. Sara promises to help him get through with his speech. Hetty has promised Olivia that she will stay out of the wedding preparations, until Olivia and Jasper make, in her mind, an ill-fated decision. From then on, Hetty vows to take control, much to Olivia's chagrin as Hetty wants to plan a lavish affair with an ostentatious wedding dress.

Approximately six months after Blair was originally going to bring Sara back to Montréal, Sara decides, after a small mishap at Lawson's Store, that it perhaps is time to return home. Accompanied by Hetty, Sara has a short homecoming as Blair is killed in a freak accident on the day of their arrival in Montréal. Following the funeral in Avonlea, everyone learns that Blair has it written in his will that Sara's nanny, Louisa J. Banks, will be her guardian. Hetty is outraged. Despite their differences, Hetty and Nanny Louisa and the rest of the Kings have to band together to save Sara from those who are playing on her grief. Sara ends up being more resilient than all would have imagined, her ingenuity based on her experience at Lawson's Store.

Felix is showing a great aptitude and enjoyment of his work at the White Sands Hotel, which is noticed and appreciated by his boss, Simon Tremayne. Felix's feelings are despite the recent problems he has had with one of the hotel's important guests, wealthy but miserly and impossible to please Samuel Boddin. Since the hotel has to turn away many of its guests at tea time due to over demand, Felix sees a business opportunity: open his own tea room. He envisions this happening at an abandoned farmhouse he passes by everyday. Meanwhile, Great Aunt Eliza is dealing with her estate, which gets Alec to openly discuss his. Like tradition in the King family dictates, he will ultimately bequeath the King farm to the oldest male heir to operate, that being Felix. This act goes against Felix's wishes, which he initially does not tell his family, as well as the wishes of some of the other family members. Felix wants to please his father but also wants to pursue his dream.

As Olivia nears the end of her pregnancy, Jasper's eccentric and bohemian family comes to Avonlea to help look after the baby once it arrives. Jasper was expecting two people at most, but several dozen of his family descend on the town. With the White Sands Hotel full, they are scattered to Alec and Janet's house as well as Rose Cottage, much to the dismay of all the adult Kings, who have no idea how long they will have to put up and put up with these strangers. What's worse for Hetty is that Olivia has taken up the offer of cousin Selina Dale, who takes after her mother Minerva as a free expressionist, to stay for a year to look after the baby while Olivia goes back to work. Hetty will not allow a King baby to be raised by weirdos, she who alternately decides to take a sabbatical from work to care for the baby. Beyond the resulting squabbling going on between the King and Dale families about the care of the baby, Olivia and Jasper ponder what they will be like as parents.
